What makes a dispute letter actually work
Bureaus receive millions of disputes. Generic letters get routine responses. Letters that cite the specific statute and demand specific verification get taken more seriously.
Cite the specific law
FCRA § 1681i(a)(1)(A) requires the bureau to conduct a reasonable reinvestigation. Referencing this statute signals that you know your rights and are prepared to escalate.
Be specific about what is wrong
"This account is reported late" is weak. "Payment dated [date] was reported as 30 days late; bank records confirm payment was received on [date]" is verifiable — and harder to dismiss.
Request written confirmation
FCRA § 1681i(a)(6)(A) requires the bureau to notify you of the investigation result. Ask for this in writing. If they change or delete the item, you're entitled to a free updated report under § 1681i(a)(6)(B)(i).
Create a paper trail
Certified mail with return receipt requested creates a delivery record the bureau cannot dispute. The 30-day clock starts from the date they receive your letter.

Common questions
Is this really free?
Yes — no account, no card, no trial. Generate as many letters as you need and copy them right here.
Are the statute citations legally correct?
The tool uses well-established FCRA provisions (§ 1681i for reinvestigation, § 1681e(b) for accuracy, § 1681c(a)(4) for obsolescence). These are standard citations used by consumer law attorneys. This is a self-help tool, not legal advice — for complex situations, consult a consumer law attorney.
How is this different from Athena Access?
This generates a template based on the type of dispute you describe. Athena reads your actual credit report, identifies specific violations, and generates a personalized letter grounded in your exact findings — the account, the inaccuracy, and the specific statute the bureau or furnisher is violating.
How long does the bureau have to respond?
30 days under FCRA § 1681i(a)(1)(A) — extendable to 45 if you submit additional information during the window. If they can't verify the item, they must delete or correct it.
Should I mail the letter or file online?
Both are valid. Certified mail with return receipt requested gives you a timestamped delivery record and is harder for the bureau to lose or dismiss. Online portals are faster but may limit your documentation options.

Disclaimer: This tool provides general self-help information and document templates for educational purposes. It is not legal advice, and Athena Access is not a credit repair organization (CRO) or law firm. The statute citations reference provisions of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (15 U.S.C. § 1681 et seq.) that have been in effect for many years; verify current law before relying on any citation. Individual outcomes vary — disputing an item does not guarantee deletion or correction. For complex credit situations, consult a licensed consumer law attorney.
